SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) -- On his way to a second division German club, reigning South Korean football MVP Lee Jae-sung said Thursday he's determined to prove he's made the right choice.

Lee will leave Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the K League 1 to join Holstein Kiel in the 2. Bundesliga, ending a 4 1/2-year stint that saw him win the Best Young Player honors in 2015 and MVP in 2017, while winning three championships in the past four seasons.

"I've always dreamed of playing overseas, and I felt I was at a point where I needed a challenge in my career," Lee said in a video message released by Jeonbuk Thursday. "I wanted to test myself against foreign players."

Lee said he made "an extremely difficult decision" to leave Jeonbuk and added he has nothing but fond memories from his times with the K League 1 club.

"I know I've chosen to go down a difficult path," Lee added. "I'll try to compete with the pride of a K League MVP and prove that I've made the right move."

Making Lee's departure official, Jeonbuk said the deal includes a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros and that Jeonbuk will receive additional cash if Holstein Kiel get promoted to the top division or Lee is dealt to another club.

Last season, Holstein Kiel ranked third in the 18-team league to earn a spot in the promotion playoffs, where they lost to VfL Wolfsburg 4-1 in aggregate score. Holstein Kiel last competed in the top division in 1963.

Lee, 25, has netted 26 goals and picked up 32 assists in 137 matches for Jeonbuk. He also represented South Korea at the FIFA World Cup in Russia last month.
